Love the Sinner is a personal documentary essay exploring the connection between fundamentalist Christianity and homophobia. In 2016, a mass shooting at the Pulse nightclub Orlando, FL shocked the world and devastated the LGBTQIA of Orlando. Queer filmmaker Jessica Devaney grew up deeply immersed in Evangelical Christianity in Florida. The mass shooting at Pulse, said to be inspired by the evangelical zeal of the killer, forced Jessica to consider her upbringing in a church that saw her life as uniquely sinful. She had avoided having conversations with church leadership that might have challenged their homophobia. “Love the Sinner” explores what responsibility we have to actively oppose those we love who don’t believe in dignity and equality for all.
