Meet our Grantees

Sustainable South Bronx

http://www.ssbx.org/

Have you ever heard of “Environmental Justice”? Neither had we, until we met Majora Carter at TED2006. Now we know: it’s making sure that the burdens modern life places on the environment and quality of life are borne equally by everyone.

In other words, there shouldn’t be one part of town where all the landfills, chemical plants, sawmills, truck traffic, and other blights on neighborhood life are concentrated. There shouldn’t be a city like that, a country like that, a continent like that.

Majora Carter founded Sustainable South Bronx  to create Environmental Justice Solutions through innovative, economically sustainable projects informed by community needs.

SSBx addresses land-use, energy, transportation, water and waste policy, and education to advance the environmental and economic rebirth of the South Bronx, and inspire solutions in areas like it across the nation and around the world.

The HF awarded a grant to assist with creating, developing and disseminating new opportunities for earned income using green-collar economic strategies.
