Why did the chicken cross the road? We have no idea, but did you know that some breeds of chicken are gone forever, others are dying out, and that one way to save them is to eat them?
We didn’t know that either.
Christine Heinrichs told us. She is one of the few recognized environmental journalists in the world, whose special knowledge of all matters relating to poultry made her an especially valuable source of information about avian flu. In the worldwide hysteria over this sometimes fatal illness, flocks were being destroyed without ample evidence and the survival of several breeds was at stake. Through organizations Christine has brought to The HF’s attention, we have learned how important this aspect of our environment is to the survival of biodiversity as we know it – right up to and including tonight’s dinner. (We met Christine through The Society of Professional Journalists’ coaching program – an overlap of The HF’s interests in coaching, journalism and philanthropy)
The SPPA is trying to preserve, protect, and improve rare breeds of poultry, bantams, ducks, geese, and turkeys. This is the community hub of farmers and fowl enthusiasts, who educate each other, share best practices, and help each other locate rare stock. Christine has also written the definitive guide to raising chickens and her guide to raising poultry will be published later this year.
